Position Summary:

A Black Diamond Product Development Engineer is responsible to manage the new product development activities for Ski, Mountain, or Climbing products.Together with the project team the Product Development Engineer will manage the different activities from concept phase until mass production to ensure that project costs and timelines - as well as other project objectives - are being met and products can be introduced successfully.

During the product design phases the Product Development Engineer is responsible to manage manufacturability, supply chain design, total cost and investments and project timeline. Throughout the project phase the Product Development Engineer is the glue that ties design teams to other functions in the organization and assures a seamless introduction of new products into the mass production cycle.

In close cooperation with Supplier Development, Sourcing and Supply Chain Management,the Product Development Engineer is a key participant in the process of sourcing and qualifying new vendors and suppliers. After products have been successfully developed the Development Engineer is also responsible to coordinate continuous improvement activities to improve the performance of products that are being produced. 




Minimum of a Bachelor of Arts and/or Science degree from an accredited University or College



Professional training in Engineering, Design and Business disciplines.


Work Experience


Minimum of 5 years experience working in a development group of highly motivated product developers.

Must have the proven ability to understand design concepts and have a clear track record of developing products that meet all development objectives (Design, costing, quality and delivery).

Must have extensive experience working independently both domestically and in Asia developing products with contractors and material suppliers. He/She must be comfortable negotiating (costs, lead-times, agreement, compliance charge backs, etc.).

Skills and General Experience:
  • Knowledge of project management and product development process.
  • Experience with new product introduction, project planning and production ramp up
  • Understanding and experience with basic engineering and production tools/methods like: tolerance analyses, process control, PFMEA, SPC etc.
  • Experience with mass production fabrication techniques related to technical product
  • Experience in sourcing products, assessing and qualifying vendors and negotiating costing, minimum order quantities and supplier capacities
  • Experience with make or buy analyses and total cost analyses
  • Experience with strategic vendor management
  • Experience and understanding of MRP software, CAD software, Word processing and Spreadsheets are required.
  • Good analytical skills and excellent problem solving skills required.

Required licenses:  Valid passport and drivers’ license

Required ability to travel: He/She must be willing to travel within the contiguous United States of America (USA), as well as, abroad to work with suppliers, contractors, and others. He/She may also attend relevant off site events as required to complete his/her job responsibilities. This position may require a total travel time away from Salt Lake City, Utah, USA of up to twenty percent (20%) of the work year or fifty-two (52) business day or ten (10) weeks per year.
